Why your gas fireplace won't light, and what's actually failing

The pilot lights, you hold the knob, you let go, it dies. That's usually the thermocouple or thermopile, not the gas valve. These millivolt systems generate their own power. As the probe oxidizes, output falls below what the valve coil needs to hold open. Intermittent at first. Worse on cold mornings. A spark-ignition direct-vent insert fails differently: bad igniter gap, dirty flame-sense rod, or a tripped vent pressure switch.

Pilot hoods clog. Lint, pet hair, and spider webbing block the orifice. Palos Hills ranches and split-levels get carpet fiber pulled into the burner compartment through the lower louver. Flame goes lazy and yellow, then drifts off the sensor.

Retrofitted log sets in old wood fireboxes bring their own problems. The damper must be clamped open. Logs set wrong block the burner ports and lay soot on the back wall. If the chimney also vents a water heater, that orphaned flue matters to the diagnosis.

On Heatilator, Majestic, and Superior prefabs, check the chase cover first. Rust stains running down the siding mean water is already inside the chase. That's a different repair than a dead thermopile.
