Gas Fireplace Pilot Light Repair in Palos Hills, IL
Call (708) 607-9680What a pilot light service call actually involves
Gas gets shut off at the appliance valve first. The glass front or log set comes out. Then the pilot assembly is pulled and inspected: hood, orifice, igniter electrode, thermocouple or thermopile. Lint, pet hair and spider webbing block the tiny pilot orifice constantly. That gets cleaned, not replaced, when the part is still sound. Millivolt output is read with a meter, open circuit and again under load with the main burner calling. A thermopile that tests fine cold and collapses under load is failing. Wall switch, thermostat wire and valve terminals get checked too, since a corroded switch mimics a dead generator.
The flame itself tells most of the story. A proper pilot wraps the thermocouple tip in the hot inner cone. Lazy, lifting, or yellow flames usually mean a partly plugged orifice or low gas pressure.
Palos Hills has a lot of retrofitted gas log sets dropped into former wood fireboxes, plus 1970s Heatilator, Majestic and Superior prefabs. Pilot assemblies on those are matched to the valve body, usually SIT or Robertshaw. Some are discontinued and need a conversion kit. Sealed direct-vent inserts are different work entirely, with intermittent ignition modules and battery backup.
A pilot that relights but won't stay lit is often not a parts problem. Tight postwar houses with replacement windows have no combustion air provision. Run the dryer and a bath fan together and the chimney backdrafts. Nesting debris in an uncapped flue does the same thing. We check draft before selling anyone a thermocouple.
