Can a gas unit go into the fireplace I already have?

Usually, but the answer depends on the flue, not the firebox. Three different jobs hide under one phrase. A vented gas log set drops into an existing masonry firebox and needs the damper permanently blocked open. A sealed direct-vent insert needs its own coaxial pipe run up the flue. A new direct-vent unit means framing and a sidewall or chase termination.
