Why Palos Hills chimneys need liners

Most liner work here starts with a furnace change. A high-efficiency furnace vents out the sidewall in PVC. The water heater gets left behind, venting alone into a flue sized for two appliances. That flue is now oversized. Flue gases cool, condense on the clay tile, and the moisture eats mortar joints from inside. We see it constantly on 1960s–70s ranches and split-levels. The fix is a properly sized stainless liner, usually aluminum-unsuitable because of what gets burned alongside it.

The other driver is cracked clay tile. Freeze–thaw works water into a crowned-off chimney crown. Tiles shift. Gaps open between courses. An older flue may be under-lined to begin with, or unlined at the smoke chamber.

A camera scan tells us which. Ask to see the footage yourself. Cracked tile and offset joints are obvious on screen, no expertise required.

Open fireplace flues are a different job. Those take a larger-diameter liner, often insulated with a wrap or poured mix, and the corbelled exterior chimneys common on these sidewalls sometimes have an offset that complicates the drop. We check that before quoting, not during.

Relining does not fix bad flashing or spalling brick. Those are separate problems, and we will say so.
